The course includes an intensive programme with over 50 hours of theoretical lessons, accompanied by comprehensive teaching materials included in the price. The theory lessons take place online on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 20:00 to 22:00 while some of the charting lessons, which require the physical presence of the instructor and participants, are held at the USI/SUPSI East Campus.

Course presentation

For more than 20 years, we have been holding courses for the Italian deep-sea sailing licence.
In recent years, due to the pandemic, we have been holding the courses online, which has allowed us to improve our teaching according to new needs.
We have decided to continue with the same system, i.e. to bring our classroom directly to you, allowing you to take the course easily and effectively from the comfort of your own home.

Participants receive the teaching material in printed form and can follow the entire programme page by page from the screen of their PC or tablet, and have the opportunity to intervene to ask questions or make comments.

With regard to charting, which requires the physical presence of the instructor and participants, two or more classroom sessions are planned, each lasting a full day (perhaps Saturday, approx. 7 hours), the first towards the third week of the course to learn all the basics of charting (Ship's Point, plotting routes and surveys, calculating distances and fuel consumption, intercepting routes, coastal navigation, drift and drift, etc.). The second is held after the middle of the course, always scheduled for a full day, perhaps more than one, to perform and deepen together the new ministerial exercises of 2022.

All exercises are also saved on Google Drive and can be viewed by course participants whenever they wish. This is a very important didactic support that allows for the full potential that charting offers.

Next start date: Tuesday 27 February 2024

Programme

The programme includes 50 hours of theoretical lectures to ensure in-depth preparation of the examination topics, such as: regulations, safety equipment, reading nautical charts and recognising the coastline, flat navigation (estimated and coastal), maritime signals (lighthouses, beacons, buoys), course plotting and correction, all charting and navigation issues, meteorology, etc.

Theoretical lectures are held online on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 to 10 p.m., while charting classes are held both online and in the classroom at the USI/SUPSI East Campus.

Price

Thanks to a collaboration with the Sport Service, the course is offered at a special price of CHF 1,000 (instead of CHF 1,500).
All teaching material can be supplied by hand or by post against payment of a deposit of CHF 500 to confirm enrolment.

The full registration fee also includes full days of physical presence in the classroom and registration fees for the examination at the Genoa Harbour Master's Office.

The School

For more than twenty years now, the Yacht Club del Mare has been offering high-quality training that goes far beyond passing the examination for a sailing licence. We want to provide the knowledge to become responsible captains because going to sea is beautiful but there are rules that every sailor must know and every captain must be able to enforce.

In all these years, more than 300 friends have obtained their licences with us and many of them now sail the seas all over the world, gaining not only technical, navigational, but also human and cultural experience.

The advantages offered by our school are readily apparent:

  • possibility to follow the course from the comfort of one's own home;
  • no travelling by car or other means, parking problems;
  • you can choose your own exam date;
  • in the rare event that you do not pass the exam on your first attempt, you will be able to retake the course free of charge, even if only partially, until you obtain your licence.

Course language

The course and teaching materials are available exclusively in Italian, while the applications are translated into Italian, English, French, German and Spanish.

Practical pre-examination exercises

In order to pass the practical examination, it is necessary to demonstrate that you know how to drive the boat under sail at different paces and to be able to carry out the main mooring and anchoring manoeuvres. To achieve this level of preparation, our school organises targeted courses that form an integral part of the training and take place over 3 weekends in Genoa, for a total of approx. 30 hours of lessons.

During the last weekend, moreover, at our subsidiary's premises in Genoa, the students' preparation will be checked by means of a pre-examination held by our instructors. It is important to come to this appointment with a thorough knowledge of the entire subject.
The total cost per person is CHF 1,400, to be paid in advance, and includes, in addition to the lessons, the boat, the skipper, a snack for lunch and the possibility of sleeping on the boat on Saturday evening (weather conditions permitting).

The pre-examination and at least one weekend of practice are also compulsory for students with sailing and cabin cruising experience, and are fundamental and of great help in assessing the level of preparation achieved.

Examination

The exam consists of a written paper test, after which you move on to the oral exam, which is conducted with multiple-choice quizzes.
After passing the theoretical examination (papers and quizzes), you enter the practical examination, which can take place on the same day or on another date.
